Greetings from Pipal Tree, Bangalore!

Pipal Tree, in collaboration with Bharat Beej Swaraj Manch, is hosting a get-together of farmers from the dry-land regions of India from 18-20 December 2017 at Fireflies Intercultural Centre, Bangalore. This get-together of farmers is aimed at sharing best innovative and traditional practices in dry-land farming and allied activities, identifying issues and challenges in sustainable livelihoods in dry-land regions, and exploring the role of local self-governance institutions in the promotion of dry-land agriculture, and related livelihood activities.

There are numerous reports on the significant role played by small-scale farmers in ensuring food and nutrition security of the country’s population. Unfortunately this contribution is not sufficiently valued. Small-scale farmers often lead a precarious life due to reasons such as uncertainty of weather, water shortages, poor linkages to resources, insufficient influence in the market, deficient support systems, etc. The situation is all the more critical in the dry-land regions. The dry-land farmers get-together is organized in this context to look at what contributes to Sustainable Livelihoods in the Dry-land Regions. We hope to look at agricultural and related means of sustainable livelihood in the dry-land regions both at household level and community level.

Farmers’ reflections will be complemented by experts and government officials working on related areas.

We request organizations, who can contribute to this process, to nominate three farmer leaders and the coordinator of the farmers programme to participate in this get-together and share knowledge and experiences. Since interactive sessions will be in English, the coordinator should be able to assist his/her group with translations. We would like to encourage participation of women farmers, and hence would request to keep this in mind while filling the registration form. The last date of receiving the registration form is 25th November 2017. A format for presentation by farmers will be shared once the participation is confirmed.

We hope to use this occasion to encourage exchange of seed diversity of dry-land crops, cook traditional meals, and immerse in cultural performances related to the agricultural traditions of the respective regions. Hence the participants are expected to come prepared to contribute to any of these activities. We will be sharing a detailed outline of the get-together to confirmed participants to fill in their contributions.

We will take care of the board and lodging of the participants at Fireflies Intercultural Centre from the evening of the 17thof December to the morning of the 21stof December.
