Greetings from the Pravah family!
With every passing day, we realise that our aspiration of an equal society is being severely tested.
Despite a projected GDP of 7.5%, India continues to fair poorly on the Human Development Index with a world ranking of 131 out of 188 countries. A recent survey by Oxfam revealed that the richest 1% of the country held 73% of the wealth generated last year. This disparity widens further as we factor in social exclusion based on caste, class, gender, sexuality, disability and religion. Communities that have been historically disadvantaged are being systematically excluded and growth only seems to be a game of the privileged.
How do we, as the youngest country which is also the largest democracy in the world respond to the current state of affairs?
Volunteers from Pravah’s SMILE In-turn-ship programme, by the virtue of having volunteered with grassroot organisations across the country for four to six weeks have come back more aware of this disparity, with a greater resolve to address it. As young socially conscious citizens of the country, our volunteers believe that conversations on rising inequalities are of immense value and should involve more young people in the process.
We believe their stories need to be heard because they reflect an experience that has allowed them to closely understand the ‘other’, see the world differently, take part in democracy & become responsible citizens of the world.
With this, we host Jashn-e-Agaaz ’18 as a space where young people share stories, engage with people from identities different than their own, inspire each other and actively take part in a democratic dialogue.
