Learnings from Kerala Floods for River Basin Rejuvenation and Management and Water Related Disasters in the Context of Climate Change
Conference in Memory of Latha Anantha
15-16 November 2018 | Thrissur | Kerala
Invite and an Appeal
On 16th November 2018 it would be one year since Latha (Dr. Latha Anantha) left us. Time moves so fast…memories still linker on.
All of you would agree that Latha was one of the prominent persons in Indian water sector. A naturalist to the core, she had dedicated her entire life for the cause of environment, especially for flowing rivers and for conservation of Western Ghats. Chalakudy River had a special place in her life and work. Founder of River Research Centre and part of the Chalakudy Puzha Samrakshana Samithi (Chalakudy River Protection Forum), she was part of many collectives including the Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India (Water Conflict Forum to be brief), International Rivers Network, etc. Her words and deeds would continue to inspire people, especially the younger generation. The best tribute one can give her is to continue and strengthen the initiatives she had taken. As part of Latha’s first death anniversary, ‘Friends of Latha’ plan to hold a national workshop on “Learnings from Kerala Floods for River Rejuvenation and Management and Water Related Disasters in the Context of Climate Change” on the 15th and 16th of November 2018 at Thrissur, Kerala. All of us are “Friends of Latha”. Do come and participate in this memorial conference.
There is also a plan to conduct a state-wide campaign for the cause of rivers, during November 2018 – January 2019 period. In fact, the earlier plan was to take up this campaign from August-September and then have the two-day conference as some sort of a culmination of the campaign. Preparations had also begun. However, the entire plan had to be re-configured because of the devastating floods that struck Kerala in August.
The conference will discuss various aspects of the floods including possible links with climate change, inadequacies in disaster preparedness, issues regarding reservoir operations, etc. Experiences of worst affected river basins / districts will be shared. Ensuring e-flows in rivers and river revival and river basin management were themes close to Latha’s heart. The workshop will be discussing this. It would also initiate a discussion on how to engage with water related disasters that would be on the increase with climate change. Tributes will be paid to Latha. Along with academic deliberations, cultural events shall also be organised during the two-day event. Detailed programme is being worked out and this would be shared with all of you shortly.
Please do treat this as a warm invite to the conference and do come. Local hospitality would be taken care of by the local organisers.
Though we are trying to mobilise some resources for the conference and the three month campaign from institutional sources, we also feel that it would be great if “Friends of Latha” can also pitch in to partly meet the costs. So this is also an appeal for contributions. Most of you did pitch in very generously to take care of part of the medical expenses when Latha was not well. We are hopeful that all of you would pitch in with your contributions to take care of part of the expenses related to the campaign and the conference.
