National Convention of Green Socialists and Tax Denial Satyagraha
Organised by Graama Seva Sangha
Demanding the withdrawal of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) imposed on handmade products across the country, the Gram Seva Sangh has decided to continue its ‘tax denial satyagraha’ until all such products are brought under the ‘zero tax’ group without a ceiling.
The recent GST Council resolved to withdraw the tax imposed on khadi, but the forum said khadi alone does not constitute the handmade sector. “We demand that agricultural products, handloom fabrics, ploughs, blankets, baskets, mats, and other handcrafted products be allowed the same benefit,” a release from the forum said, adding that the council should make a distinction between rural cooperatives and urban profiteers.
The sangh has urged the council to accept the definition of a handmade product as one that involves not less than two-thirds use of a hand-driven instrument and not more than one-third use of automation. The zero tax cover without ceiling should be extended to cooperatives, apart from individual rural producers. Read more
